Large Group Hen House | Bicclescombe Grange | Sleeps 26

The space

Set at the end of a private drive on the outskirts of Ilfracombe, Bicclescombe Grange brings together grand country-house style and big-group fun in a way that works beautifully for a hen weekend. Sleeping up to 26 guests across 8 bedrooms, this period property gives your group room to spread out, dress up, lounge around and celebrate without feeling on top of each other.

The house sits within three acres of gardens, with open fields and countryside nearby, so there is a lovely sense of privacy from the moment you arrive. It feels tucked away and special, yet you are still close to North Devon’s coast, Ilfracombe’s restaurants and bars, and some of the region’s best-loved sandy beaches.

For hens who want more than just a place to sleep, this is a brilliant base. There is a 40-foot indoor heated swimming pool, a hot tub, a games room, big communal spaces and a seriously well-equipped kitchen designed for large-group gatherings. Whether the plan is a relaxed weekend of pool time and grazing boards, a dressed-up dinner with cocktails, or a lively house party-style celebration before heading into town, Bicclescombe Grange gives you the setting to make it happen.

Inside the house

Bicclescombe Grange is arranged over three storeys and furnished in a period style, giving the house plenty of character. With 8 bedrooms and space for up to 26 guests, it is well suited to larger hen groups who want everyone under one roof. The layout makes it easy to create a weekend that flows naturally: late breakfasts in the kitchen, afternoon swims, pre-dinner drinks, games in the evening and slower mornings with coffee and catch-ups.

The kitchen is one of the real centrepieces of the house. Custom designed for large groups, it features granite worktops, marble tiles, solid oak furniture and stainless steel appliances, including a 7-burner range and a huge American-style fridge freezer. There is also an ice maker and a large-capacity wine cooler, which are very useful touches for a hen weekend. High and low-level seating areas make it sociable as well as practical, so some of the group can cook, others can pour drinks, and everyone can still feel part of the same conversation.

There is a large flat-screen TV with Sky Q in the kitchen, plus a separate 60-inch large-screen television with all Sky channels elsewhere in the house. Free WiFi runs throughout, making it easy to stream playlists, coordinate plans, share photos and keep everyone connected.

For entertainment, the games room is a great bonus. It includes a full-sized snooker table, dart board, table tennis and even a piano, giving the group plenty to do between swims, dinners and nights out. It is ideal for low-key competition, forfeits, hen party games or simply keeping the weekend lively without needing to leave the house.

Hen weekend highlights

The indoor heated pool is a major reason to book Bicclescombe Grange for a hen celebration. At 40 feet long, it is much more than a token splash pool, giving your group space for proper swims, poolside chats and fun daytime plans whatever the weather is doing outside. Add robes, playlists and a few drinks afterwards, and it becomes a relaxed centrepiece for the weekend.

The hot tub adds another layer of indulgence. It is ideal for a slower afternoon after travelling, a chilled pre-dinner soak or a debrief the morning after a night out in Ilfracombe. For groups planning a pamper-style itinerary, the house has the space and setting to arrange extras such as beauty treatments, a private chef, cocktail making or a yoga session, subject to availability with your chosen suppliers and host approval.

The gardens are another highlight. Spread across several levels, the grounds include ponds, waterfalls, grassy areas for games, footpaths through the woods and even alpacas to meet. It is a lovely backdrop for group photos, outdoor drinks and slower moments between activities. If your hen weekend includes a themed brunch, garden games, a treasure hunt or a relaxed afternoon in the sunshine, the outside space gives you plenty of options.

Inside, the combination of the sociable kitchen, games room, pool, hot tub and large TVs means the house works just as well for a stay-in celebration as it does for a weekend mixing nights out with time at home. There is enough to keep the group entertained without every moment needing to be planned, which is especially helpful for larger hens with mixed ages and energy levels.

Location & getting around

Bicclescombe Grange is located on the outskirts of Ilfracombe, one of North Devon’s main coastal resorts. The setting gives you the best of both worlds: a private-feeling house with gardens and countryside around it, plus easy access to town amenities, places to eat and drink, and the coast.

Bicclescombe Park sits at the end of the drive, offering a pleasant local spot for a stroll if anyone wants fresh air without committing to a full day out. Ilfracombe itself is close by for harbour walks, restaurants, pubs and evening plans, while the surrounding North Devon coastline opens up lots of hen-friendly activities.

Beach lovers are well placed here. Woolacombe, Saunton and Croyde are all within reach and are known for their wide sandy beaches, surf culture and big coastal views. Depending on the style of your weekend, you could plan a surf lesson, paddleboarding, a beach picnic, a coastal walk, lunch with sea views or simply a relaxed afternoon by the water.

For getting around, larger groups will usually want to plan transport in advance, especially for evenings out or beach trips. Taxis or pre-booked minibuses can make the weekend run more smoothly, particularly if you are coordinating up to 26 guests. Once back at the house, there is plenty to enjoy on site, so you can balance days out with relaxed time at Bicclescombe Grange.
